Here’s how to shorten the nothing part.

Finding the school: map first, graph second

Start with bathymetric contours the night before: follow the main channel and mark every swing where it kisses a flat, every hump it wraps around, every point it clips. Those intersections are the candidates. On the water, don’t fish them — idle them with side imaging and look for the school itself or the shell and rock that holds one. Ten waypoints scanned beats two waypoints fished.

The two-bait rotation

Bait one is the wake-up call: something big and fast dragged through the school to trigger competition. Bait two is the cleanup: a slow bottom bait for the fish that stay after the frenzy fades. Fire, then vacuum.

Mistakes that scatter the school

  • Parking on top of them. Sit a long cast away and never let the trolling motor wash over the spot.
  • Catching one and celebrating. Fire back immediately — a hooked fish excites the school, and the flurry is now.
  • Ignoring current. Generation schedules are published for most TVA-style reservoirs; fish moving water.
